Columbia University Negotiates Deal with Trump

(MENAFN) The board of trustees at Columbia University, located in New York City, convened on Sunday to deliberate over the conditions of a possible arrangement with the Trump administration that could reinstate part of the university’s suspended federal funding.

This information was provided by individuals familiar with the ongoing talks.

As stated by two sources, more recent versions of the proposed agreement between Columbia and the administration do not involve a "consent decree," according to a news outlet.

Initially, a government task force had pushed to place Columbia under such a decree, which would have ensured the university adhered to federal directives on addressing antisemitism on campus.

This legal mechanism would have empowered a federal judge to supervise the institution’s efforts to remain compliant.

However, newer proposals have shifted toward assigning a "monitor" or an independent observer with more limited oversight than a judge, the newspaper further noted.

Sources close to the discussions mentioned that the arrangement under consideration includes reinstating a segment of Columbia’s federal financial support.

Nevertheless, the precise elements of the deal remain under negotiation, and there is still a possibility that the agreement may not come to fruition.

Columbia, a prestigious Ivy League institution, has been locked in a prolonged dispute with the Trump administration concerning both its access to federal resources and its institutional independence.

Back in March, the administration rescinded approximately USD400 million in federal funding and contracts, accusing the university of inadequately safeguarding Jewish students against "antisemitic harassment" after campus demonstrations in support of Palestine.
